Canada Geese Control

What Community that has a water feature and does not also have a Canada Geese problem. Ontario Power Generatio has come up with an idea that seems to be helping in their effort to control the population at their power plants.
As part of their Goose Control Program, Ontario power Generation has strategically positioned plastic wolf decoys, at various locations around a power plant, that has an unusually high number of geese that live on the grounds, in an effort to deter the most familiar and widespread goose in North America from settling around the well-traveled pathways. Under certain lighting conditions, the decoy wolves can appear quite real, as noted by staff who have been amused to find evidence of staff attempting to 'scare off' the plastic guardians with sticks and stones.
Goose Life Facts:
A typical Goose will live up to 24 years mating for life and returning to the same nesting and birth sites every year. The average nest size is up to 4 feet across built on land and usually close to water where they will lay 3 to 6 eggs with up to 12 possible.
Geese are a grazing bird and consume up to 4 lbs of grass per day and drop about 2 lbs of fecal mater daily. The adult birds moult for about 6 weeks every summer which renders them incapable of flight thus adding to the over all quantity of fecal matter in the area they nest.

Foster Memorial to Resonate Again This Year

Once again the Foster Memorial will resound to the sound of music thanks to the Thomas Foster Committee. All shows run from 7:30 to 8:30 on friday evenings with the season starting on May 4 with a local choir. The committe accepts donations at the door allowing everyone to enjoy the event. The donations are used to help maintain the grounds and pay for utilities.

What a great way to start your weekend at the cottage, stop in on your way up north and enjoy the music and the arcitecture of this wonderfull Byzantine style building.

Thomas Foster visited the famous Taj Mahal (built as a burial place for the emperor's wife) in India and was inspired to build a memorial temple in his home town, with a Christian adaptation. It contains three crypts for Mr. Foster, his wife, and his daughter. It was erected in 1935-36 and cost $250,000.

A striking contrast to the surrounding farmlands it is built of Indiana limestone. The interior of the Temple, has four great arches supported by marble columns. The floor contains terrazzo and marble mosaics with details such as the River Styx with water lilies. The windows are hand painted, fired and leaded glass .

Words alone can not describe the beauty of this unique Treasure located 4 km north of Uxbridge on Durham 1 (Concession 7).

The Dowling Scrolls

Just occasionally, Uxbridge is treated to a rare glimpse of history. To the enjoyment and amazement of all who see them, The Dowling Scrolls are only occasionally unrolled and brought to light for a significant display. Rev James Thomas Dowling created this astounding one of a kind work of art during his tenure at the original Uxbridge Baptist Church during the 1870’s

Rev. Dowling used these scrolls in the church, using the appropriate background to help illustrate his sermons. He designed a unique display system that held the scrolls upright, where the scrolls could be turned and the appropriate panel displayed. These scrolls weigh hundreds of pounds each and are very difficult to manoeuvre, yet he took them to different churches and evangelical meetings to enhance his preaching. He had a team that traveled with him by horse and buggy to assist in his speaking engagements.

Uxbridge Supports Our Troops with a Sea Of Red T-shirts

Uxbridge showed its support for our troops by turning Main Street and Elgin Park into a Sea of Red as the crowd donned red t-shirts and participated in a parade, drum head service songs and more.

Unlike many countries our forces are not conscripts. Members of the Canadian Forces are not drafted or conscripted, they voluntarily sign on knowing that they will continually be putting their lives on the line for us and others in this global community in which we live.

In addition to standing on guard for the hard fought for freedoms we enjoy in this country today our Armed Forces have always played a key role in helping to maintain peace around the Globe.

While few would say that they support war or strife it is only appropriate that we all support those who strive to minimize the impact it has on our lives, our land and throughout the world.

A video was created as a contribution to this outpouring of support, to be sent to Kandahar and all the deployment bases in Canada, to show our troops that we support them.
